NEW YORK -- The Yankees commemorated Mark Teixeiras eight seasons in pinstripes, a stretch that included a pivotal role in the clubs run to the 2009 World Series championship, with a ceremony at Yankee Stadium before Sundays 5-2 loss?loss to the Baltimore Orioles. On an overcast, 60-degree day -- and with the team out of playoff contention on the final day of the regular season -- the ceremony was sparsely attended, but Teixeira received rousing ovations from the fans both during the ceremony and after his final round of batting practice as a Yankee earlier in the day.It was a little weird, but I think because I dealt with it for the last two months and understood what, I was kind of counting down the days, Teixeira said. I prepared for it, mentally and emotionally. I prepared for it, so it wasnt as weird as I thought it was going to be. It was like, now that day is finally here.Teixeira announced earlier this year he would retire after this season. It was huge, Teixeira said. I wanted to make sure that I got to say goodbye and thank you one last time. I couldnt have asked for anything more but a win. That would have been nice. Absolutely, that would have been nice. But I got a chance to say goodbye, which was very important.Accompanied by his wife, Leigh, and their three young children, Teixeira was honored with a video tribute that featured such highlights as his home run that ended Game 2 of the 2009 American League Division Series against the Minnesota Twins and the game-ending grand slam he hit Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox.He was recognized for his charitable work with Harlem RBI, to which he has made sizable monetary donations, and was presented with a framed replica of his No. 25 jersey by Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. He also received a base that was signed by all of his teammates;?CC Sabathia and Brett Gardner, the only remaining members of the 2009 championship team on the Yankees roster, presented it.Teixeira, who was batting fifth and playing first base, grounded out in his first at-bat, but he made a sparkling play, diving to rob Matt Wieters of a potential double, to lead off the second inning. He was removed from the game with one out in the seventh inning and received a standing ovation from the home crowd. After tipping his cap, he received hugs and congratulations in the dugout.?Tyler Austin?took over at first base.I told Joe, listen, I wouldnt be able to top what happened on Wednesday night no matter what, Teixeira said of Yankees manager Joe Girardi. So knowing that, after my third at-bat I let him know. Whatever happened. If I hit a home run, I probably would have left after that home run, but after the third at-bat, I told him I was ready. He came out after the seventh and said lets get one out. He took me out.In his eight seasons with the Yankees, Teixeira batted .248 with 206 home runs, 622 RBIs and an .823 OPS. Overall, he was a .269 career hitter with 409 home runs (he is one of only five switch-hitters in baseball history with at least 400 home runs), 1,298 RBIs and an OPS of .870. He is also a three-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner at first base.Teixeira played his first four seasons for the Rangers, split 2007 with Texas and the Braves and spent 2008 with Atlanta and the?Los Angeles Angels. But he said he would always be a Yankee.Theyre the team that Ill always be remembered for, I think, Teixeira said. In my mind, Im going to live here for a really, really long time and be coming to Yankee Stadium and take my kids to games here. Hopefully, if they honor the 2009 World Series sometime soon, Ill be back with all my old teammates. Boty Nike Air Max . LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Whenever Bill Self looks back at the box score from his 207th win at Allen Fieldhouse, one that made him more successful in the building than any other Kansas coach, hell see Tyler Selfs name on it.His son, a senior backup who rarely plays, knocked down his only shot in the game. Now that you mention it, its nice, Self said after the seventh-ranked Jayhawks 86-65 victory over Siena on Friday night. It was nice he got in there and made the shot. The Saints did their best to spoil the party.Marquis Wright hit three straight 3-pointers midway through the second half, and the gritty senior guards three-point play got coach Jimmy Patsos team within 63-58 with about 7 1/2 minutes left. But Lagerald Vick answered with back-to-back baskets for the Jayhawks, kicking off the game-defining 16-2 run. Frank Mason III added a 3-pointer and a couple foul shots, Devonte Graham got into the act and the Jayhawks -- so accustomed to dominating inside -- leaned on their guard play to seal the win.At one point, Mason, Vick and Graham scored 20 straight points for the Jayhawks.Theres a lot of things we could have done better, said Mason, who finished with 18 points. The Jayhawks were just 3 of 12 from beyond the arc, struggled from the foul line and were exposed on the defensive end of the floor, where Siena was able to get to the basket too easily.I didnt think we played very tough, Self said. I didnt think we played very fast. We looked slow defensively. I thought our big guys really struggled early.Graham finished with 13 points and nine assists, and Vick had 12 points off the bench, as the Jayhawks (2-1) extended their winning streak to 42 straight at Allen Fieldhouse.Wright had 25 points, Javion Ogunyemi added 19 and Khalil Richard had 10 for the Saints, who took advantage of the Jayhawks poor perimeter shooting to offset a big rebounding disparity.Theyve got depth, they have inside players. You thought you had them,, then their quickness to the ball took over, said Patsos, who got a primer on playing at Allen Fieldhouse earlier Friday from former Kansas guard and current Maryland coach Mark Turgeon.dddddddddddd.He asked his wife to marry him out on the floor, Patsos said, and I said, `Yeah, you coming back to play there? And he said, `Hell no! Now I know why.EXHAUSTED JAYHAWKSThe Jayhawks opened the season with an overtime loss to Indiana in Hawaii, then beat top-ranked Duke in New York. They traveled about 12,000 miles for two games in roughly four days, and Self said he could see the weariness in his players during shoot-around.We were physically tired, Self said, and our brain told our body we were tired.BIG PICTUREKansas freshman Josh Jackson, whom many believe will be the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, spent most of the night in foul trouble. He was visibly frustrated and wound up with 10 points.Siena could use Lavon Long on the floor. The senior forward, who averaged more than 10 points a game last season, has been suspended for the first three games for violating team rules.RECRUITING WINFive-star prospect Billy Preston announced earlier in the day hell attend Kansas next season. The 6-foot-10 forward from prestigious Oak Hill Academy in Virginia signed his letter of intent this week.I dont think weve ever had the opportunity to coach a taller, more athletic skill player than Billy, Self said. He has guard-type athletic ability and skills.POLL IMPLICATIONSWith their win over the No. 1 Blue Devils and fourth-ranked Oregons lopsided loss to Baylor, look for the Jayhawks to climb back into the top five, where they began the season.UP NEXTKansas plays UAB in the semifinals of the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday night.Siena visits reigning Big South champion UNC-Asheville on Sunday.
