BOSTON -- All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia is close to a contract that could keep him with the Boston Red Sox for his entire big league career. A person with knowledge of the talks said Tuesday that Pedroia is in the process of agreeing to a deal adding $100 million over seven seasons through 2021. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement was not yet complete. The new deal was first reported by WEEI. Pedroia is making $10 million this year and is guaranteed the same amount in 2014 as part of a $40.5 million, six-year contract that started in 2009. That deal includes an $11 million club option for 2015 with a $500,000 buyout. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound sparkplug was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2007 and AL MVP in 2008. Its important to Pedroia to finish his career in Boston. The deal would expire after he turns 38. "Its not official or anything, but, yeah, this is my home," he said before Tuesday nights game against the Tampa Bay Rays. "I love being here. I love my teammates. I love the city. So if (the deal is finalized), Ill be pretty excited." Pedroia is a big reason for Bostons success. The Red Sox began play Tuesday with a half-game lead over the Rays in the AL East with a 60-41 record after winning just 69 games last season. In 100 games through Monday, Pedroia was hitting .308 with six homers and 57 RBIs. He made only two errors and missed just one game. A new contract "is not going to change who I am or my role with this team," he said. "My job is to still go out there and try to help us win a game every day and Ill try to do all I can to make that happen." The 29-year-old was a backup on the AL all-star team this season and entered the game after starter Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch. Cano can become a free agent after this season, his ninth with the New York Yankees. Pedroia might have received a better deal than the one thats close to agreement if he had become a free agent after the 2014 or 2015 seasons. "I dont look at it like that," he said. "I want to be at a place where its special to me and this place has been that." And he doesnt expect a rich contract to change the way his teammates look at him. "They still have to look down at me. Im pretty short," Pedroia joked, "but its a good feeling." In 956 games through Monday, Pedroia had a .303 career batting average, 96 homers and 466 RBIs. A second-round pick of the Red Sox in the 2004 amateur draft, Pedroia made his major league debut in August 2006. He hit .191 in 31 games that season then had his breakout season in 2007 when Boston won its second World Series championship in four years. He hit .317 with eight homers and 50 RBIs. He did even better in 2008 with a .326 batting average, 17 homers and 83 RBIs, winning a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award. In 2011, Pedroia posted career highs of 21 homers and 91 RBIs with a .307 batting average. He dipped slightly last year with a .290 average, 15 homers and 65 RBIs as the Red Sox finished in last place in the AL East with a 69-93 record under manager Bobby Valentine. "I love being here," Pedroia said. "I live and die by this team and its important to me to be here my whole time." But who will make the cut? The England boss has picked three goalkeepers, seven defenders, 11 midfielders and five forwards. Three of those players wont be included when Hodgson announces his final squad on May 31. Im making life that little bit harder for myself by having to reduce that to 23, said Hodgson. But you never know what will happen in the preparation phase. Maybe some of these decisions will be made for me. As Hodgson suggests, injuries could make his task more straightforward but should everyone come through unscathed he will have some tough calls to make. Here we look at which players could be at risk of missing out on the final Euro 2016 squad… Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster, Joe Hart, Tom Heaton England must take three goalkeepers to Euro 2016, according to UEFA regulations, so Forster, Hart and Heaton will be on their way to France. Even a run to the final would mean just seven matches for Hodgsons men - a workload youd expect Bertrand, Clyne, Walker and Rose to be able to cope with, given they are first-team regulars in the Premier League.Clyne played six of Englands 10 qualifiers, while Walker and Bertrand featured only once and Rose didnt play at all - although he did start the two most recent friendlies against Germany and Netherlands. So who could be at risk?Terry Butcher is tipping Delph to miss the trip, given his limited impact this season since switching to Manchester City. The former Aston Villa midfielder made just eight Premier League starts in 2015/16. The only thing that stood out for me was Fabian Delph being in there . There are three players who have to be jettisoned and Id say Delph will be one of the three. Terry Butcher Henderson and Wilshere will have to prove their fitness after missing substantial game-time but their presence in the 26-man group suggests Hodgson is willing to give them every chance of doing just that.Should they convince the manager of their readiness, Drinkwater - who claimed the man of the match prize on his England debut in March - could be the central midfielder to miss out, given his lack of international experience.Sterling has been far from his best at Manchester City this season, registering just three goals and two assists, but only Joe Hart made more appearances in qualifying and Hodgson is loyal to his regulars.Thats something Townsend has found out to his advantage. After missing the last round of England friendlies his impressive form since moving to Newcastle has won him a return to the international fold. Lallana on song This season, Adam Lallana has equalled his Premier League best tally of six assists in one campaign, double his total of three in 2014/15. As well as a threat from the bench - all three of Townsends England goals have come in the final 20 minutes - the winger could also fill the vvoid left by the injured Danny Welbeck on the left.dddddddddddd.PFA Young Player of the Year Alli and team-mate Dier seem certain to feature in France after making impressive starts to their England careers, while Barkley, fresh from his most productive season yet, and Liverpool pair Lallana and Milner also seem on course to make the cut. Premier League top scorer Kane could not have done more and pacey Vardy, who finished second in the goal standings to Kane, is the man of the moment.Sturridge has endured a number of injury lay-offs this season but has continued to score regularly for Liverpool. He didnt feature at all in qualifying but was Hodgsons first-choice frontman at the World Cup. [Marcus Rashford] is one of the contenders. Theres no reason why, if he does exceptionally well, he cant knock someone off their perch. Roy Hodgson Rashfords inclusion is intriguing. The 18-year-old Manchester United striker was expected to be invited to train with the senior squad after impressing at Old Trafford but Hodgson suggested in his press conference it was not inconceivable that Rashford could force his way into the final 23.Bear in mind hes in the Manchester United team in front of Rooney in his favoured position, Stuart Pearce told Sky Sports. Hes had a wonderful end of the season and given United a big lift - and it will give the kid a big lift being involved in the senior squad.
