FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Toronto FC coach Ryan Nelsen preached diligence and patience during the barren early stretches of this season, promising that matters would improve slowly but surely. TFC still has a long way to go, but the progress Nelsen preached may be starting to peak through, as the Reds picked up their second consecutive victory for the first time since last July. Matias Labas first MLS goal, scored just two minutes into the match, provided the difference in a 1-0 victory over New England on Sunday night. A haul of seven points in three games gave Nelsen plenty of reason to smile after his players protected the early lead to see off the playoff-chasing Revolution at Gillette Stadium. "The guys showed today that sometimes when its not going as well with the ball, you need a foundation to fall back on -- thats our organization, our structure and working really hard for each other," Nelsen said. "And thats what won us the game with a little bit of brilliance to get us the goal." Laba, who was signed by TFC as a young designated player from Argentina in April, claimed possession in midfield and made a run toward the exposed Revolution goal. He hesitated as he entered the penalty area, creating a yard of space, and poked toward the far post. New Englands Scott Caldwell blocked his initial effort, but the 21-year-old persisted to score the matchs lone goal. "For me, its just a magical goal," Nelsen said. "Everything about it -- he read the pass, the pressure, then the acceleration with the ball, the burst, the composure to beat the man and a finish any striker would have been proud of. And then he followed it in. "It was a magical goal and then all of the boys worked ever so hard. Theyve got great character." The visitors needed every ounce of resolve to repel a Revolution side that asserted control in possession and probed for an opening to even the match. But TFC stood its ground in the first half as the Revoultion laid siege, withstanding several close calls. Richard Eckersley and Ashtone Morgan produced goal line clearances to protect the lead, while goalkeeper Joe Bendik parried away a Lee Nguyen half-volley and watched Saer Sene thrash into the side of the net more than once before the break. "It makes a change for us," Eckersley said. "Joes been brilliant all season. Its about time he had a bit of a day off and we started doing some of the saving." TFC continued to protect its lead in the second half, dropping deeply to stop New England from creating opportunities in the final third. New England striker Diego Fagundez tried to even the score with the last kick of the game, but his acrobatic effort hit the outside of the goal frame. Why is that?John Gonzalez: Many people bring their emotions to it. Oh, youre pregnant, you should lay down and put your feet up. Heres a cup of tea. However, thats not appropriate. Women should be active during their pregnancy and, if possible, should be exercising during pregnancy as well. Studies show that exercising during pregnancy can be a benefit. We do know for example if pregnant women are not active, they are more likely to develop blood clots during pregnancy, and they are at increased risk of diabetes and inappropriate weight gain.DA: What are some of the other benefits of exercise during pregnancy?JG: There are some studies that have come out that suggested that exercising during pregnancy decreases your risk of having a Caesarean section. Theres some literature out there as well that have suggested that exercising during pregnancy reduces the risk of developing diabetes during pregnancy.DA: Whats a typical rule of thumb for exercising while pregnant?JG: Common sense rules a little bit. If you exercise during pregnancy, you should be able to talk while youre exercising. If you find that youre short of breath, youre over-exercising during pregnancy.DA: How did you come up with guidelines for Brown, whos probably doing more physical activity during pregnancy than most pregnant women?JG: Sarah is a special case. She is an Olympic-level athllete and they are not a dime a dozen, so recommendations in her case had to be individualized.dddddddddddd For example, one of the things that we did in Sarahs case is that we ordered an ultrasound every three weeks to check on the appropriate fetal growth to make sure the baby was growing appropriately.DA: How high can your heart rate safely go when youre working out while pregnant?JG: In the old days, physicians used to tell their patients that your heart rate should never get up above 140. Well, that was dropped years ago by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. Theres no such recommendations anymore. From the literature, we actually recommended that while training, Sarahs heart rate should only reach up to about 80 percent of her maximal heart rate. Keep in mind that the maximal heart rate for every person is going to vary.DA: What happens if you go above 80 or 90 percent of your maximum heart rate?JG: Some studies suggest that if women approached 80 or 90 percent or above of their maximum heart rate, that they would actually see changes in the baby, where a babys heart rate would actually slow down or wed actually see changes to the blood flow of the uterus. Thats why we recommend keeping a heart rate below about 80 percent.DA: What are some other things to watch out for while exercising during pregnancy?JG: You want to be well hydrated and make sure you dont work out in very hot circumstances. You dont want to raise your core temperature too high. If you have elevated temperatures, like if youre sitting in a sauna or a hot tub, you might increase your risk of developing neural tube defects or spinal cord abnormalities in your baby.Women who are pregnant and want to start an exercise program during their pregnancy should see their physicians and work out an individualized program with their doctors. There are some medical conditions that pregnant women should not exercise with. You need to be working with a physician that is aware what the American College of OBGYN recommends as far as guidelines for exercising during pregnancy. ' ' '
