MOSCOW -- Its been the team of KGB spies, goalkeeping great Lev Yashin and Putin-era state capitalists. Despite its rich history, though, Dynamo Moscow is in deep trouble.Only a few thousand fans braved freezing temperatures to watch Saturdays drab 0-0 draw against the Zenit St. Petersburg reserve team in the Russian second division. Chants echoed around the mostly-empty stadium in a pale imitation of Dynamos fierce rivalry with Zenit, traditionally a major security risk given the animosity between the fans.Until a humbling relegation this year, Dynamo had never dropped out of the Soviet or Russian top division. And for much of its 93-year history, the very idea was impossible given Dynamos powerful political protectors, such as Stalins right-hand man and secret police chief Lavrenty Beria. On the field, Dynamo was renowned for the goalkeeping skills of Yashin -- the Black Spider -- and the innovative passovotchka short-passing style of the post-war years, a prelude to modern tiki-taka.The collapse of the Soviet Union curtailed Dynamos clout, and a solitary Russian Cup title in 1995 has been the only consolation for the 11-time Soviet champions. Still, Dynamo often remained in touching distance of a title, buoyed in recent years by a flood of cash from the state-owned VTB bank.VTB is now in the process of pulling out after years of big spending and few successes, leaving behind debts estimated by Dynamo general director Evgeny Muravyev at 13 billion rubles ($200 million). For a club with small crowds and minimal TV revenue, thats a daunting sum.Muravyev told Russian agency R-Sport this month that Dynamo is trying to pay off some debts and restructure others but new obligations are piling up related to the fact that we dont have many sources of funding at the moment. Were not in a great state financially. The cash crisis is serious enough that the government has issued a declaration that it wont allow Dynamo to die.Until recently, Dynamo had been notorious for overspending in the transfer market. After Portugal reached the final of the 2004 European Championship, Dynamo swiftly signed seven Portuguese players, most of whom made little impact, as did former Germany striker Kevin Kuranyi, signed in 2010 for a reported 6 million euros ($6.4 million) a year. All that spending created vast losses, attracting a financial fair play sanction last year from UEFA which barred Dynamo from European competition.A spending plan published by the club earlier this year shows more unusual spending for a struggling club, with $93,000 earmarked in January for a mascot which has yet to appear and up to $140,000 per game budgeted for VIP travel packages. Its not clear, however, how much was spent.Still, not all is lost for Dynamo. The draw against the Zenit reserves ensured that it will go into the winter break in the promotion places. But even if Dynamo makes it back to the Russian Premier League, it will not be the same free-spending Dynamo as before, and wary of repeating the fate of another famed Moscow club, Torpedo, now toiling in the third division after repeated financial problems. AUSTIN, Texas -- In some versions of a story Sept. 4 and Sept. 5 about a Notre Dame-Texas game, The Associated Press erroneously reported the Irishs deficit in the third quarter. Notre Dame was trailing 31-14, not 31-17.A corrected version of the story is below:Texas beats No. 10 Notre Dame 50-47 in 2OT thrillerTyrone Swoopes scored on a lunging 6-yard touchdown run in the second overtime, giving Texas a 50-47 victory over No. 10 Notre Dame on Sunday nightBy JIM VERTUNOAP Sports WriterAUSTIN, Texas -- After two losing seasons and with the pressure of an entire program bearing down, Charlie Strong turned his team over to a freshman quarterback for Texas opener, something no Longhorns coach had done in more than 70 years. He even called Shane Buecheles mom the night before to say her son would start against No. 10 Notre Dame. She started crying.I told him dont let her down, Strong said.Buechele didnt, and instead delivered big time with 280 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns before Tyrone Swoopes, the senior he beat out for the job, punched in a lunging 6-yard touchdown in the second overtime for a thrilling 50-47 win Sunday night.I said a year ago we probably would have lost that football game because we didnt know how to finish, Strong said.Buechele was the first freshman quarterback to start a season-opener at Texas since Bobby Layne in 1944.You knew (Buechele) could handle it. You knew the stage wouldnt be too big, Strong said.Yet it was Swoopes who won it in the end. Disappointed not to start, Swoopes still played a huge role in the offense with three touchdowns and big runs that punished Notre Dame tacklers who struggled to bring him down.On the winning score, Swoopes broke a tackle, burst up the middle and stretched the ball across the line. Swoopes has been booed by Texas fans the last two seasons and was treated to a chorus of Swooooooopes from the Texas-record crowd of 102,315.With that chant and booing, I cant really tell the difference, Swoopes said.Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer rallied the Irish from a 31-14 deficit in the third quarter and finished with 215 yards passing and five touchdowns.Texas went ahead 37-35 on DOnte Foremans 18-yard touchdown run before Notre Dame blocked the extra point and Shaun Crawford returned it for a 2-point score that tied it at 37 with just under four minutes left.Strong, and Longhorn faans, had seen Texas collapse and lose games late the previous two seasons.ddddddddddddThis is a great start for us, Strong said. Our fans really needed that. Weve been down for so long. ... It was a night for us to just make it right.THE TAKEAWAYNotre Dame: Coach Brian Kelly will have to consider scrapping the quarterback rotation between Kizer and Malik Zaire that sapped momentum and helped dig the Irish into a big hole.No final decision has been made, Kelly said. Its never easy playing two quarterbacks.Texas: A huge win for Strong, who is trying to avoid being the first Texas coach with three consecutive losing seasons since the 1930s. Its been said time and again in recent years, but the Longhorns sure look as if theyve got their quarterback, despite some sputters in the second half.We needed tonight to get this program back in the spotlight, Strong said. I know one game does not make a season. We have many more to go. But its a great start.POLL IMPLICATIONSNotre Dame: A loss means a drop, but how far? The Irish sure didnt look like a top-10 team when the Longhorns were pushing them around early.Texas: Texas hasnt been ranked since late 2013 when Mack Brown was coach. Beating a top-10 opponent with big plays, tough running and late moxie probably earns a return to the Top 25.18-WHEELERSwoopes ran the 18-wheeler package -- so-named because he wears No. 18 -- to near perfection, moving the chains and punishing Notre Dame tacklers in the process. He finished with 53 yards on 13 carries and was a dynamic change of pace when he came on for Buechele.Hes 260 pounds and runs big, said Notre Dame defensive lineman Isaac Rochell.INJURY REPORTNotre Dame: Wide receiver Torii Hunter Jr. was knocked out of the game in the third quarter on a ferocious hit from DeShon Elliott in the end zone that broke up an Irish touchdown.Kelly said he had heated discussions with game officials asking why the play wasnt reviewed for a possible penalty.TEXAS: Safety Dylan Haines left the game in the second quarter with a head injury.UP NEXTNotre Dame: The Irish play their home opener against Nevada on Saturday.
