NEW YORK -- New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey is considering season-ending surgery after losing feeling in his pitching arm the day of his last start.Harvey was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome during an examination by Dr. Robert Thompson in St. Louis on Thursday, general manager Sandy Alderson said. The issue involves a constriction of the opening in which nerves and blood vessels pass between the neck and shoulder. It is more of a nerve issue in Harveys case, Alderson added.Thompson presented Harvey with two options that are currently being weighed. Harvey could undergo surgery now, which requires a four-month period before returning to pitching. Or Harvey could attempt to delay the procedure by receiving a nerve-blocking injection.Alderson suggested that the latter approach may not be effective and that surgery would ultimately be necessary anyway. Delaying the surgery could impact Harveys availability in 2017.Its unclear how effective that would be or for how long, Alderson said about the nerve blocker. ... I do believe that surgery is probably inevitable and more a question of timing than anything else. So, obviously, to the extent that were backed up for a period of time, it begins potentially to encroach on 2017 as well.Alderson said the Mets were unaware Harvey was dealing with any shoulder discomfort until he complained after his last start. Harvey allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Miami Marlins on Independence Day.Manager Terry Collins said Harvey lost some feeling in the tips of his fingers. He came in the training room afterward and said, My shoulder is dead. My arm is dead. Theres no energy there. I couldnt feel the ball, Collins said. Obviously it was happening during the game. He didnt say anything until after the game.Chris Young, Phil Hughes and Josh Beckett are other pitchers who have dealt with thoracic outlet syndrome.Thompson likely would perform Harveys surgery, according to Alderson. Harvey will return to New York from St. Louis and should make a decision in the next couple of days.Alderson acknowledged there is no certainty Harvey will still be a frontline starter when he returns.Any time that you introduce a significant surgery of this type, I think you have to be cautious about what will happen, Alderson said. But, at the same time, I fully expect that Matt will be back and ready to go in 2017.Collins recalled managing John Hudek with the Houston Astros in the mid-1990s, when Hudek had surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. He came back and pitched with it, Collins said. I dont know if he was as effective as he was before he had it.Chris Young came back and had a good year in Seattle. So I think you can bounce back from it. But everybody is different, as we know. Anytime you have surgery, theres a level of concern. The Mets vaunted rotation is dealing with its share of injury issues. Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard are pitching through bone spurs in their pitching elbows, while Zack Wheeler has endured a pair of setbacks in his return from Tommy John surgery and will not be back until late August at the earliest.Right-hander Logan Verrett will start in place of Harvey on Saturday and should remain in the rotation after the All-Star break, Collins said. Matzs bone spur will need to be surgically removed, although the Mets are hoping anti-inflammatory medication will allow him to delay the procedure until after the season because it requires a three-month recovery time.Wheeler received a cortisone injection last month for nerve irritation in his pitching elbow and has not yet returned to a mound. Alderson said he is confident, not certain that Wheeler will pitch for the Mets this season. Wheeler is planning to return to the slope of a mound this weekend for the first time since the June setback.Hes had a couple of minor setbacks -- nothing serious, but serious enough that projecting any sort of return at this point is a little bit speculative, Alderson said.In his second season back from Tommy John surgery, Harvey is 4-10 with a 4.86 ERA in 17 starts. Alderson said it is not a relief if those numbers were at least partly caused by a shoulder issue that Harvey did not disclose until after his last start. Alderson said Harvey would need to reveal how long the issue has been present.Im not sure theres a sense of relief, Alderson said. Its like using the word closure. Its usually not really the case. In this case, given the potential implications with surgery as an option, it gives us some clarity in terms of where we go from here. Other than that, Im not sure its relief.Alderson noted the minor league system is thin with potential rotation contributors, although he cited Gabriel Ynoa and Sean Gilmartin as potential considerations. Alderson added that the Mets will at least consider trading for a starting pitcher.Well take a look at whats there, Alderson said. Were obviously always comparing whats out there with what we have. So well just have to see.Harveys potential loss for the season comes at a terrible time. Captain David Wright recently underwent season-ending surgery to address a ruptured disk in his neck. And the Mets are set to open a four-game series against the first-place Washington Nationals on Thursday night. The Mets trail by four games in the National League East.I dont want it to sound like woe is me, but woe is us, Collins said. I said something yesterday to one of the coaches. I said, Man, when do you think this is going to stop? Can things possibly get worse? And the next day they continue to get worse. Its something you have to deal with. I know you can walk over on the other side of the field right now and theyre not going to feel sorry for us.Stitched USA Soccer Jerseys . 1 position. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was joined in the Sky Sports News HQ studio by former England defenders Chris Powell and Steve Howey who, along with a host of top-flight managers, suggested proposals they would like to see implemented. IFAB announce law changes The Interntional Football Association Board has published law changes for 2016/17 season IFAB law changes Removal of triple punishment Kicking off backwards Offside free-kicks Injured players staying on pitch Red cards before kick-off Stricter penalty rules Violent conduct without contact We also want to hear your views - leave your suggestions in the message boards below or tweet @SkyFootball...Dermot Gallaghers proposals1. Throw-ins to be taken by the nearest person when the ball goes outDERMOT SAYS: It infuriates me how long it takes to get the ball back in play.2. Halves reduced to 35 minutes with an independent timekeeper stopping the clock when the ball goes out of playDERMOT SAYS: Everybody would know that were going to get 70 minutes of football. I watched some games and Im not sure whether we get an hour of football in some matches. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher tells us what changes he would make to the laws of football. 3. Ban all substitutions in stoppage timeDERMOT SAYS: Its nearly always a winning team that makes substitutions just to break up the flow of the game. I realise there could be a serious injury so the caveat, for me, would be that if you had to replace a player you could. However, to prevent people manipulating the rule, the player who came off wouldnt be allowed to play in the next game.Steve Howeys proposals1. Punishment for feigning injury/simulationHOWEY SAYS: Moussa Sissoko went down in the box against Tottenham on the final day of the season and referee Anthony Taylor was so unlucky because from his angle it looked like he had been fouled. However, on second view there wasnt any contact from Jan Vertonghen. Perhaps we could look at whether players who have cheated the referee could be punished retrospectively.2. Punishment for players surrounding officcials Howey would like to see crowding the referee eradicated from the game HOWEY SAYS: If youve got more than three or four players going around the referee that doesnt help him at all.ddddddddddddThat has to stop. Normally you would expect just the captain, although that is difficult if the captain is the goalkeeper.3. Clarification of the offside lawHOWEY SAYS: In my career as a defender, if a player was offside they were offside. Now its difficult because of active and inactive players. Back in the day you could push the defensive line up and catch strikers offside, that doesnt happen now. Of course you want to see goals but its tough for linesmen and defenders. If a player is offside he should be offside because, at present, there are differing opinions and decisions week in week out.Chris Powells proposals1. Additional substitutes in extra-time of cup gamesPOWELL SAYS: This could apply to extra-time in general. I watched the League Two play-off between Accrington and Wimbledon and Lyle Taylor was obviously struggling but, because Wimbledon had used their three subs, he couldnt come off. He could have carried on, picked up an injury and missed the final so I feel additional subs would be good.2. Third-placed finish straight to play-off final Brighton were dumped out of the play-offs despite finishing the season third with 89 points POWELL SAYS: If you finish third after 46 games you should go to Wembley. The sixth-place team should play the fifth team in a one-off game at the fifth-placed teams ground because they finished higher and should have the advantage. The winner of that plays the fourth-placed team in a one-off at their ground and then the winner of that plays the third-placed team at Wembley. The handicap is there for wherever you finish in the league and I feel this should happen in the play-offs.Managers proposalsArsene WengerId like to see video introduced for offside. It should happen in a similar way to goal-line technology. It would open up the game and would give an insight to the linesman who could be a bit more permissive. I think it would make many decisions easier. Aaron Ramsey wrongfully had a goal ruled out for offside in Arsenals goalless draw with Liverpool in August Ronald KoemanWe need to use more technology in football because there are still incorrect decisions in games. We can and we need to change that because it would make football fairer.Mark HughesId like an independent timekeeper because its one of those grey areas where, at the end of games, you have no idea what the referee is going to inform his assistant to add on. Id like to have more players on my bench. Thats the first thing I think about. It is important to have the opportunity to change the same players but have more choice. Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri Francesco GuidolinManagers should have one or two time-outs each game. It is an important new possibility to communicate with players during a game.Your proposalsWhat football law changes would you like to see?
