GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Coyotes escaped a loss by less than a tenth of a second, then turned to their go-to guy in the overtime shootout for another win over the Edmonton Oilers.Radim Vrbatas 43rd career shootout goal and another from Oliver Ekman-Larsson helped give the Arizona Coyotes a 3-2 comeback victory over the Pacific Division leaders Oilers on Friday night.Vrbata has the all-time NHL record for shootout goals, passing Detroits Frans Nielsen with Fridays tally. If you do it right theres a high percentage chance that it will work, Vrbata said of his goal, which preceded Ekman-Larssons winner. When it goes to a shootout and youre successful, you get a point that you might need at the end of the season.Ekman-Larsson said he isnt very comfortable in shootouts.I closed my eyes and shot it, he said. I got lucky.Mike Smith made 32 saves to help the Coyotes improve to 20-0-4 in the last 24 meetings with Edmonton. Its a run that goes back to 2011.Smith is 14-1-1 in his career against the Oilers. The three-on-three overtime saw the Oilers go on a power play and fail to score, but Connor McDavids shot beat Smith as time expired. The goal was disallowed on review, however, when officials deemed it did not cross the goal line before time ran out.Thats about as close as Ive ever seen, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said of McDavids no-goal. We were fortunate to get the extra point. You know your backs against the wall, youve got to leave it all out there and our guys did.McDavid, who lost the puck on his shootout attempt, continued his productive season with a goal for his NHL-leading 28th point of the season. The 19-year-old McDavid, last seasons first overall draft pick, has nine points over those four games, five on goals.Max Domi and Shane Doan scored for Arizona.Adam Larsson also scored for the Oilers.Arizona took a season-high 40 shots and played its sixth one-goal game of the past seven. The Coyotes have three overtime points from that span of games.Cam Talbot finished with a season high 38 saves for Edmonton. The Oilers had won three in a row.The Coyotes peppered Talbot with 20 first-period shots, the most they have had in a period this season. All but one were on net, and one of those finally went in with 2:22 left in the period. They were a lot sharper than we were in the first period and they gained some confidence and momentum off it, Oilers coach Todd McLellan said.We gave up way too many chances, way too many shots on net, McDavid said. (Talbot) was great back there.Domi lifted a shot over Talbot after a faceoff and four passes, 9 seconds after Edmonton had taken a 2-0 lead.Larsson gathered in Oscar Klefboms pass, with teammate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins letting the puck go past him to an open Larsson for the Oilers second goal. McDavid scored just 1:31 into the game on a rush, taking Jesse Puljujarvis pass, skating ahead of defenders and beating Smith 1-on-1 stick-side.The Coyotes were denied a goal after a review in the first period, but tied it at 8:06 of the third period. Doan tipped in Anthony DeAngelos shot after Doan won a face-off and got to the front of the net for the deflection. That goal was also reviewed on replay but stood. Doan is two goals away from 400 for his career and scored his first goal since the season opener last month.Game notesArizona called up G Justin Peters from Tucson of the AHL on an emergency basis to back up Smith, with Louis Domingue dealing with a lower-body injury. ... I think our players will be excited about it.The Cardinals (6-1, 4-1 ACC) could wake up Sunday morning in a first-place tie in the ACCs Atlantic Division depending on how undefeated Clemson fares against Florida State that night, though the Cardinals still are at a disadvantage in the tiebreaker because of their loss to the Tigers. But more than getting a spot in the conference championship game, the Cardinals also are hoping impressive wins will get them consideration for one of the four spots in the College Football Playoffs.Thats not necessarily a hot topic with Petrino, however.I think it takes care of itself, he said. I dont think anyones going to care what I have to say whether were going to get in the playoffs or not. Lets go out on the field and lets try to perform very well and show the world that were a good football team and hopefully that will all take care of itself the right way.Like said before, last week I think, theres a lot of football to be played out there. Theres still a lot of things come up, theres going to upsets, and well see where were at.Nevertheless, the big win over the Wolfpack was a much-needed tonic.Quarterback Lamar Jackson continued his Heisman Trophy quest with another big game, with 355 passing yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 76 yards and another score against N.C. State.Senior tight end Cole Hikutini had a nice game as well with six catches for a career-high 118 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, junior linebacker Stacy Thomas emerged as a playmaker with two tackles for loss annd his first career interception.ddddddddddddith all the attention given to Jackson and the Cardinals scoring punch, its easy to overlook that they are the only team in the country ranked in the top 10 in total offense and total defense.I like the way our front guys are playing -- besides defeating blocks, were able to make tackles and get production, Petrino said. A lot of times as a defensive lineman its hard to get that kind of production.Defensive end Drew Bailey has 30 tackles with 5.5 for losses and tackle DeAngelo Brown has 20 with 4.5 for losses in leading Louisvilles three-man defensive front.Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall credited Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham for building that success. When you have a combination of good coaches and good talent, that ends up having a lot of success and thats over the years, Louisville has done that, Mendenhall said. They have added good football coaches, and they have recruited very good talent to fit their schemes and vice versa.Mendenhalls Cavaliers (2-5, 1-2) seemed to be getting their act together after losing two of their first three games, but after posting victories over Central Michigan and Duke, they have lost to Pittsburgh and North Carolina their last two outings.Quarterback Kurt Benkert, a transfer from East Carolina, struggled in those two outings, passing for 126 yards against the Tar Heels and completing 20 of 44 passes against Pitt for 278 yards after throwing for 757 yards in the two wins.I think his development and his production has been on track to this point, Mendenhall said. And now that were playing better, better and better teams, his execution, his performance is having to climb at a more immediate pace, and thats only realistic if hes prepared for that. And so weve seen a few teams, weve seen some looks, hes beat up a little bit and thats impacted his kind of poise and patience in the pocket just a hair.
