DETROIT -- A pair of struggling teams coming off one-goal losses meet Sunday when the Detroit Red Wings host the Calgary Flames at Joe Louis Arena. The Red Wings (8-9-1) lost 1-0 to the Capitals in Washington on Friday night while the Flames (7-11-1) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night in Calgary.Detroit is 2-7-1 in its past 10 games.I think its only human to get a little frustrated, Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg told www.mlive.com. I think its easy to get frustrated when youre doing good things, when you correct mistakes, youre playing better and you dont get points. But weve got to see the positive in it, too, and stay with it. Eventually we will get our wins.Detroit seemed to play well enough to win in its last two games, but has nothing to show for it.The Red Wings lost 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday on Nikita Kucherovs goal with 1:10 left. On Friday, Washingtons Jay Beagle scored the only goal of the game with 5:11 to play. These are the ones you want to win, or least get to overtime and get a point and have a chance for the two, Zetterberg said after Friday nights game. Leaving here with nothing is hard but weve got to try to see the positive in what we did better than before and keep going from there. The 10-game slide coincides with the absence of left winger Thomas Vanek, who missed the past 11 games with a hip strain. He is expected to return to the lineup on Sunday.I think a lot of the guys will feel some of the weight come off their shoulders with him back in the lineup, goalie Jimmy Howard said. Hes really good around the net, hes really good at deflections, little re-directions.Before Vanek was injured, he led the team with four goals and eight points in seven games. Detroit was 3-7-1 without him, only averaged 1.64 goals per game, were shut out three times and only 5-for-40 on the power play.Hes a big player for us, Justin Abdelkader said. Obviously, he got off to that great start. It was tough to see him go down with injury. Hell come in and bring a veteran presence. Hes really strong on the puck and hes got a great shot.Center Darren Helm, one of Vaneks linemates, is out 6-to-8 weeks after suffering a dislocated shoulder against Tampa Bay on Tuesday. The Flames have injury issues of their own.Star forward Johnny Gaudreau will also miss 6-to-8 weeks because of a broken finger on his right hand suffered in the 1-0 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.A slash by Eric Staal caused the injury and Calgary said that Gaudreau was slashed 11 times in the game without a penalty call. There are tactics with good players, but when you chop a guy in the hand theres a rule that says you cant do that, Flames general manager Brad Treliving told the Calgary Herald. Were not naive -- do we whack guys, too? Probably. But the frustration comes when that turns into a player being out for an extended period of time. Garrett Temple Jersey . NEW ORLEANS -- Former NFL star Darren Sharper filed a federal court notice Friday that he now plans to appeal his conviction and nearly two-decade sentence in a drug and sexual assault case -- a case in which he pleaded guilty.Sharper pleaded guilty or no-contest in four states where he faced allegations that he drugged and raped women. Charged in both state and federal jurisdictions, he had entered a so-called global plea deal in early 2015 that called for a roughly nine-year sentence. But U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo in New Orleans rejected what she said was a too-lenient sentence and last week imposed an 18-year, four-month prison term -- just shy of the 20-year maximum she said was called for in sentencing guidelines. On Thursday, a Louisiana state judge added a 20-year sentence to run at the same time. The grounds for Sharpers appeal were not spelled out in Fridays one-paragraph filing, and it was unclear what the defense teams next move would be in state court in Louisiana or other states. A defense attorney did not immediately respond to a call for comment Friday afternoon, and the state appeal court in New Orleans was closed.Donald Chick Foret, a New Orleans attorney with experience in the federal court system, said the appeal following a plea bargain and sentence is unusual.Hes got very experienced and sophistticated lawyers who have extensive experience with these types of complex criminal matters, and if an appeal was filed, they must think that they have an issue for review, Foret said.dddddddddddd.Sharper pleaded guilty to criminal charges in Arizona and was immediately sentenced to nine years. He pleaded guilty in Nevada and no-contest in California, and is awaiting formal sentencing. All of the charges arose from allegations that he drugged and raped women. Criminal charges named nine victims, but Milazzo said during court proceedings that there are allegations from as many as 16 victims -- a factor state judge Karen Herman reiterated in sentencing Sharper to 20 years Thursday.Sharper apologized to victims and their families after two victims gave tearful and sometimes angry impact statements in court this week. After retiring from a 14-year career in 2011, Sharper was working as an NFL network analyst when women began telling police in several cities similar stories of blacking out while drinking with him and waking up groggy to find they had been sexually abused.Sharper played in two Super Bowls, one with the Green Bay Packers as a rookie and one with the?New Orleans Saints when they won in 2010.
