OTTAWA -- Seeing himself as a bit of a chameleon, Bobby Ryan believes he can blend in on just about any team. And while he is convinced that he will adapt to any spot in the lineup, the new Ottawa Senators star forward has no intention of filling Daniel Alfredssons skates. Ryan made an appearance in the nations capital Wednesday for the first time since being acquired in a July 5 trade from the Anaheim Ducks. "I dont think theres anyone whos going to take that place," the 26-year-old Ryan said of the leadership role former captain Alfredsson had on the team. "Especially with what hes done in the community," he added. "If anybodys going to do that, its going to be (Jason Spezza)." The Ryan trade was overshadowed by Alfredssons surprising decision to sign with Detroit as a free agent after 17 seasons in Ottawa. Ryan said it will take some getting used to being in a hockey-mad market like Ottawa. "Its a completely different culture from what its been like the past six years," he said. "(Being in Ottawa) is a completely different way of viewing hockey. I cant wait to be a part of it." Ryan is expected to play on the Senators top line alongside Spezza and says in addition to getting to know the city, he needs to get to know his fellow teammates. He says hes spoken to Spezza a couple of times but they havent yet skated together, something Ryan said he needs to do so they can both get a feel for each others playing style. "I know that well probably skate together for two or three weeks before camp starts," he said. "Playing with a guy like that is easy." The Senators gave up plenty to get Ryan, sending forward Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a first-round pick in 2014. Ryan had 11 goals and 30 points last season in Anaheim, where he played in the shadow of teammates Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf. "Last year was kind of a write-off," he said of the lockout-shortened season. "It just never really took off for me." Ryan said hes happy to moving to the East Coast so he can be closer to his hometown of Collingswood, N.J., a suburb of Philadelphia. "I get to be in Philly and play there, too," said Ryan. "So Im excited about that." Minnesota Twins Shirts . -- If Henry Burris has his way, he will be the starting quarterback to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats back to the Grey Cup next year. Q: Team Canada announces their Olympic roster three weeks from today. Who is general manager Steve Yzerman watching? LeBrun: Over the last 48 hours, hes taken in the home-and-home between the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche with Jamie Benn and Matt Duchene being the obvious targets. Terry Steinbach Jersey . SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Tasked with settling one of the most competitive position battles in all of college football, Notre Dame?coach Brian Kelly isnt ruling anything out when it comes to picking between?DeShone Kizer?or?Malik Zaire?as the Fighting Irishs starting quarterback.Speaking on campus Friday, one day before Notre Dame opens fall camp at Culver Military Academy for a five-day stint off-site, Kelly didnt want to get too far ahead of himself when discussing who could take the opening snap Sept. 4 at Texas -- a more liberal approach after declaring in the spring that he eventually wanted to choose one guy to lead his offense and move forward from there.I havent resisted any temptation, to be honest with you, Kelly said of how to use his quarterbacks. All I can tell you is were going to let both of them compete, and we think well have a starter for you, but I dont know what will happen during the year. During the year there might be a lull in the game where we feel like: All right, the other guys practicing well, well play him. I dont know. For me to stand here right now and tell you one guys going to be the starter every single game would be foolish of me. Ive got two really good quarterbacks, so I really couldnt tell you what Im going to do other than were going to have a starting quarterback, and we know that the No. 2s going to be ready, too. Ive got to have two really good quarterbacks in college football. I think weve all seen that your guys going to get banged up, hes going to come out and you better have the other guy ready to go, because nobody really cares that your starter went down; youve got to win anyway. So Ive got to get both of them ready to play at the highest level and then what happens, how they go in, well just ffigure that out when they get there.ddddddddddddZaire is back at full health after breaking his right ankle in Week 2 at Virginia last season, which gave way to Kizer, who led a comeback win on a moments notice en route to an 8-3 mark as a starter. Zaire is 3-0 as a starter, including a 19-for-22, 313-yard performance in last years opener against Texas. Both players are dual-threat quarterbacks hailing from western Ohio. Kizer, who is right-handed, is a redshirt sophomore. Zaire, a lefty, is a redshirt junior.Kizer completed 63 percent of his passes last season for 2,884 yards with 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, adding 520 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground.I think its just to develop on what I did last year, Kizer said of what he needs to do to win the job. Obviously we had a pretty decent season and theres a couple things that we need to improve on, and those things Ive been working on all summer, and hopefully that leads me to a position where Ill be the guy who takes the first snap.Kelly said he hadnt done as good of a job as he would have liked of letting Zaire be himself in the spring, when he was just six months removed from ankle surgery. That has changed this camp, and the fourth-year player is now hoping this will be the season it all comes together for him after losing the position battle to Everett Golson in 2014 and having it taken away from him because of injury in 2015.I just think waiting through this whole four years being able to try to get that opportunity to show my value for the team has been a good anticipation and is hopefully coming to a great storybook ending, Zaire said.
