NEW YORK -- Connecticut and Syracuse supplied plenty of great moments over the years at Madison Square Garden as members of the Big East. They had one more Monday night in a nonconference matchup.Christian Vital made two free throws with 2.2 seconds to play to give Connecticut of the American Athletic Conference a 52-50 victory over Syracuse of the Atlantic Coast Conference in the Tire Pro Classic.Andrew White III hit a 3-pointer with 9.1 seconds left to bring Syracuse into a 50-50 tie. Rodney Purvis missed a 3-point attempt for the Huskies but Vital was fouled on the rebound. Syracuses final chance was a long inbounds pass that was stolen by Connecticut.Vital, a 6-foot-2 freshman guard, said he knew Purvis was going to shoot so he just went to get position among bigger players underneath.I definitely had a lot of nerves going to the line but the timeout they called helped me out a lot, Vital said. A lot of our veteran guys talked to me during the timeout and they said `Listen, were in your city. Take us home. And I was able to do that.Purvis had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Huskies (4-4) while Jalen Adams had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Kentan Facey, who coach Kevin Ollie said has been battling a stomach virus, had a career-high 13 rebounds. This is definitely a huge win for us, Purvis said. We had some early season struggles but to come together tonight in this atmosphere, in this historic place. It was huge for us to come out with the win.White finished with 14 points for the Orange (5-3), who have lost three of four. Dajuan Coleman had 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for Syracuse.I think the three games that we just played, two and a half of them the offense just wasnt good enough to win, Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. Defense was pretty good tonight. We did a good job on the boards. We just could not score any points.Neither team shot well and that made a lot of rebounds available as both teams finished with 42.Connecticut finished 16 of 51 from the field (31.4 percent) while the Orange shot 25.9 percent (14 for 54). Syracuse was 6 of 26 from 3-point range and the Huskies were 7 of 25.Once again it wasnt the most beautiful basketball game from an offensive standpoint but I thought the defense was great, Ollie said. Some new growth was made today.Syracuse led 23-21 at halftime. The Orange used an 11-2 run to go up 37-26 with 13:11 to play. The Huskies finally started hitting some shots and they used a 19-7 run to take a 45-44 lead with 6:19 to play. Connecticut led the rest of the way except for the 50-50 tie. What we need to think about is our offense, Boeheim said, We have to get better there. These teams had met at Madison Square Garden many times when they both were in the Big East. The greatest of all their matchups was the 2009 Big East Tournament quarterfinal that Syracuse won 127-117 in six overtimes. Syracuse leads the all-time series 55-38.We were thirsty for this opportunity and we were hungry to hit and the guys really hit and fought tonight and I was very proud of them, Ollie said.BIG PICTURESyracuse: The Orange are out of the Top 25 this week for the first time this season. He came in at 124 pounds, while Mares, seeking to win a featherweight title for the second time, weighed right on the division limit of 126 pounds before they engaged in an intense stare-down that public relations personnel had to break up.You will see a new world champion, Mares said after the weigh-in. Im ready. Weve been training a whole year and were ready.Mares (29-2-1, 15 KOs), who lives in Los Angeles and will have the crowd behind him, is going into his first fight with trainer Robert Garcia in control of the corner.Mares, 31, is coming off a decision loss to Leo Santa Cruz in a featherweight title bout in August 2015. He had two fights postponed this year, including a June 25 date with Cuellar because Mares failed a New York State Athletic Commission eye exam. Mares said the postponement was a blessing in disguise because it gave him more time to mesh with Garcia, who used to train Cuellar.I feel good. I feel like the old Abner, said Mares, who was licensed by the California State Athletic Commission after passing the eye exam. Ive been in good, tough fights. This is nothing new to me. Im ready to take that belt.?Cuellar (28-1, 21 KOs), the shorter fighter but the bigger puncher, said he is aiming for a knockout victory.Im going to give you all a great fight, Cuellar, 29, said through a translator. Im going to go out there and be triumphant for Argentina. Im going to be victorious and hoppefully I will get the knockout.ddddddddddddJunior middleweight world titleholder Jermall Charlo, 26, and mandatory challenger Julian J Rock Williams, 26, will fight in the co-feature. Both made weight for their highly anticipated bout. Charlo (24-0, 18 KOs) of Houston, who is making his third title defense, weighed 153? pounds. Williams (22-0-1, 14 KOs) of Philadelphia, who is fighting for a world title for the first time, was on the division limit of 154 pounds.Like I was ready for (defense) No. 1, Im ready for No. 3, said Charlo, who has engaged in trash talk with Williams leading up to the fight. Williams kept up the smack talk after weighing in.I come here to fight and I come here to win, he said. When I punch him in the mouth, hes gonna run and run and run. Also on the card, junior welterweights Sergey Lipinets (10-0, 8 KOs) of Russia, and Lenny Zappavigna (35-2, 25 KOs) of Australia, will meet in a world title elimination fight for the right to become the mandatory challenger for titleholder Julius Indongo of Namibia, who won the belt last week when he shockingly knocked out Eduard Troyanovsky in 42 seconds. Lipinets, 27, weighed 139.8 pounds and Zappavigna, 29, was 139.6 for a fight with a 140-pound weight limit.?Blue-chip prospect Erickson Lubin (16-0, 11 KOs), 21, of Orlando, Florida, weighed 157 pounds and Juan Ubaldo Cabrera (23-1, 16 KOs), 37, of the Dominican Republic, weighed 159 for their 10-round middleweight fight. Lipinets-Zappavigna and Lubin-Cabrera wont be part of Showtimes telecast, but the network will have coverage of both bouts on Facebook Live beginning at 8 p.m. ET.Also Friday, the California State Athletic Commission released the purses for the fighters on the card. Cuellar and Mares will make $700,00 apiece, Charlos purse is $550,000, Williams $250,000, Lipinets and Zappavigna $30,000 apiece, Lubin $50,000 and Cabrera $7,000. ' ' '
