PHILADELPHIA -- Facing one of the NLs top pitchers brought out Kyle Kendricks best. Kendrick outpitched All-Star Jordan Zimmermann, pinch-hitter Kevin Frandsen hit a tiebreaking double in the seventh and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 Thursday night. Kendrick (8-6) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to help Philadelphia take three of four from the defending NL East champions. "He rose to the occasion," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Zimmermann was real good. Kendrick was right there with him." The Phillies are 7-3 since July 2, including series wins over first-place Pittsburgh and Atlanta, to pull within 1 1/2 games of the second-place Nationals and one game of .500. "Its a big win for us," Kendrick said. "I knew it was going to be close. I just wanted to give us a chance and we got some big hits." Zimmermann (12-4) gave up two runs and eight hits, striking out six in 6 1-3 innings. "My stuff was good," Zimmermann said. "On the pitch to Frandsen, I didnt get the slider low enough and he just flicked it out there." Antonio Bastardo pitched a perfect eighth and Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 20th save in 24 tries. Papelbon blew two saves against the Nationals last month and allowed two runs in a 3-2 win Monday night. Darin Ruf led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the left-field line. Pinch-runner John McDonald advanced on a sacrifice and scored on Frandsens RBI double off centre fielder Denard Spans glove. "As a group, all of us are ready," Frandsen said of Philadelphias bench. "We know theres one spot youre going to have a chance and fortunately I came through." Frandsen is hitting .355 (11 for 31) with 10 RBIs as a pinch-hitter this season. "Hes very valuable for us," Manuel said. "Hes won a few games for us already." Kendrick overcame a season-high four errors by the Phillies with two double plays and nine groundouts. Chase Utley had a career-worst three errors. "I just had to battle and keep the game close," Kendrick said. Utley got the Phillies an insurance run in the eighth by hitting a double to start the inning, moving to third on a fly ball and sliding in safely just ahead of a throw to the plate on Michael Youngs grounder to second. The Phillies took a 1-0 lead on Ben Reveres RBI single in the fifth. Carlos Ruiz reached on an infield single, advanced on Kendricks sacrifice and scored on Reveres liner to left-centre. The lead didnt last long. Bryce Harper hit a triple with one out in the sixth and scored on Ryan Zimmermans sacrifice fly to right. All-Star Domonic Brown threw out fellow All-Star Harper trying to score from second on Jayson Werths two-out single to left in the first. BALTIMORE -- There seems to be no end to the list of players capable of carrying the Baltimore Orioles to victory this season. The latest unlikely hero is Chris Dickerson, who hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to carry the Orioles past the Detroit Tigers 7-5 Friday night. Detroit closer Jose Valverde (0-1) entered in the ninth with a 5-3 lead after starter Max Scherzer retired the final 16 batters he faced. Nick Markakis led off with a homer on a 0-2 pitch before Adam Jones singled and took third on a single by Chris Davis. Valverde (0-1) then retired Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy on popups before Dickerson hit a 2-1 pitch into the bleachers in right-centre, much to the delight of the sellout crowd of 46,249. Dickerson was making his first start since May 23 following a bout with a sore wrist. Batting eighth in the lineup, he was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts before connecting. "Its an amazing feeling, just to contribute in such a big situation," Dickerson said. "This team just claws back every single time. Im just so happy I could cap it off for them." He never before hit a game-ending home run at any level. "I knew right away," Dickerson said. "It was awesome. Thats the type of feeling you just want to bottle up and take home forever. First walk-off at any level. Just an incredible feeling, an incredible moment." Jones, Davis and Manny Machado have provided many big hits for the Orioles this season, but guys such as Nate McLouth, Steve Pearce and Dickerson have done their part, too. "That says a lot about our ballclub, up and down the lineup," Markakis said. "Anybody can hurt you. I think thats a positive thing weve got going for us right now." Manager Buck Showalter said, "Its not like one guys got to carry the load." Darren ODay (3-0) got the final out in the ninth for the Orioles, who have won eight of 11. Miguel Cabrera and Avisail Garcia both homered and drove in two runs for the Tigers, who have lost four straight. This one hurt more than most. "We obviously let onne get away," manager Jim Leyland said.dddddddddddd "Scherzer got us where we wanted to be and then we just didnt close it out. Scherzer was spent and that was going to be his last inning. His pitch count was getting up there pretty good. It was no brainer to bring in Valverde." After yielding a third-inning home run to Jones, Scherzer didnt allow another runner to reach and was poised to become the first Detroit pitcher to start a season 8-0 since Jeremy Bonderman in 2007. The right-hander struck out 10 and walked two, but he threw a season-high 119 pitches before being replaced by Valverde, who came to the mound with a 0.75 ERA. He walked off with his first loss and a 3.55 ERA. "I miss a couple of pitches," Valverde said. "They have some good hitters. Tomorrow is going to be a new day. I had a tough day. Theres nothing I can do. I feel bad for Max because he threw a good game." Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez allowed a season-high five earned runs over six innings and allowed both Detroit homers. The Tigers went up 2-0 in the first inning when Andy Dirks singled and Cabrera hit his 16th homer of the season. Hes the first Detroit player to hit 12 homers in May since Willie Horton in 1968. Baltimore got a run back in the second, getting singles from Jones and Davis before Wieters delivered a sacrifice fly. In the third, Markakis walked before Jones connected to give the Orioles a brief 3-2 lead. A two-out RBI single by Garcia tied it in the fourth, and Detroit went up 4-3 in the fifth when Dirks and Cabrera singled ahead of a run-scoring grounder by Victor Martinez.
