MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers returned home after taking a four-game series from the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs, but couldnt keep that momentum going.Andrew McCutchen, Jody Mercer and Josh Bell who each drove in two runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates preserved their faint playoff hopes with a 6-3 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday night. The Brewers had won 11 of 17 since the Pirates four-game sweep in Milwaukee at the end of August, including home and away series victory over Cubs.Brewers manager Craig Counsell didnt want to hear about a possible letdown from his players.Thats part of being a professional, he said. Thats how it works. Its a different atmosphere, but its still a competition. Theres certainly a different atmosphere here than at Wrigley Field. But that didnt have anything to do with it.The Pirates won their fifth straight at Miller Park, and fifth of six overall to improve to .500 (75-75) for the first time since they were 69-69 on Sept. 8. Pittsburgh began the day five games behind San Francisco for the second NL wild card spot and St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins in between the Pirates and Giants.McCutchens two-run double in the first staked rookie left-hander Steven Brault to an early lead. Then, Bells two-run single in the top of fifth chased starter Matt Garza (5-8).We just kind of dug our hole, Counsell said. They jumped on Matt early tonight. He settled down a little bit, but we had given up five by that time.Garza allowed five runs and eight hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out two while slipping to 1/3 with a 4.66 ERA in four starts against the Pirates this season.Staked to a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth, Brault walked Jonathan Villar who stole second and moved to third on Orlando Arcias base hit. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle made a move to his bullpen and brought in Jared Hughes (1-1) to face Chris Carter. It is first and third with nobody out in the fifth, Hurdle said. Where we are in the season right now, I felt (Brault) gave us (enough.) It is a sticky situation.Carter lined Hughes first pitch at third baseman Jung Ho Kang, who fielded the ball cleanly and turned it into a double play that deflated the rally. Hughes struck out Domingo Santana to end the threat. We ended up scoring a run, but thats two outs right there on one pitch, Carter said. He ended up (retiring) the next guy. That kind of changed the momentum right there.Counsell was even more emphatic. That was a big play, he said. We had guys on first and second and got to their bullpen. Chris hit a ball hard, and he made a nice play. We battled back, but that was the opportunity we had. That certainly was the play of the game, for sure.Wade LeBlanc pitched the sixth which ended on another double play. Juan Nicasio set the side down in order in the seventh. Antonio Bastardo struck out two in the eighth and Tony Watson tossed a perfect ninth for his 14th save in 17 chances.Brault was making his seventh career start and had already lost twice to the Brewers. He allowed Santanas run-scoring double in the third and Martin Maldonados home run in the fourth. Brault scattered five hits, struck out four, walked two and was three outs from his first major-league win.Mercer produced run-scoring singles in the fourth and sixth.Adam Frazier went 3 for 4, scored twice and extended his streak of reaching base safely to 10 straight games for the Pirates.CHUGGING ALONGIn the third, Carter blooped a two-out base hit and scored on Domingo Santanas double. At 6-4, 245-pounds, Carter lumbered around the bases and would have been out by a wide margin, but second baseman Sean Rodriguezs relay bounced once in front of catcher Francisco Cervelli and squirted away. Carter scored standing up.NEW BREWERS DADSLF Ryan Braun and C Manny Pina missed the game in order to be with their wives and the newest member of their respective family. Brauns wife, Larisa, gave birth to a son, Greyson Joseph. Pinas wife, Leny, gave birth to a daughter, Jimena. However, Pina pinch hit in the ninth and flied out to end the game. Both players were expected back before the weekend.TRAINERS ROOMPirates: C Chris Stewart underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to be out six-to-eight weeks. INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler coach Chris Holtmann spent most of the last two weeks trying to get his team to play its old style. On Saturday, the pleas paid big dividendsSenior forward Andrew Chrabascz recommended using an inbound play with 15.6 seconds left and Tyler Lewis found Tyler Wideman for a dunk to help No. 18 Butler hold on for an 83-77 victory over No. 9 Indiana at the Crossroads Classic.I knew he (Lewis) would make the right read, Chrabascz said. Just a spur of the moment, put something out there and coach agreed with it. Its a one-in-a-million chance. Hes got to agree every once in a while. There was plenty for Holtmann to like in this one.Kelan Martin scored 28 points, while Chrabascz and Kamar Baldwin each added 14 to give the Bulldogs (10-1) their second straight win overall and their second upset of Indiana in four years in a doubleheader that features the states four highest-profile basketball schools. And though Indiana cut an 11-point deficit with 8:10 to play to 79-77 in the final minute, the Hoosiers (8-2) never had the ball with a chance to force a tie or take the lead in the second half. No, it wasnt easy -- it never is against their in-state rival. But the Bulldogs, as they usually do, shared some suggestions, protected the ball and found a way to hold on f or a win.James Blackmon Jr. got the Hoosiers offense in sync in the second half when he scored 16 of his 26 points. Thomas Bryant had 15 points and seven rebounds, but when the Hoosiers couldnt get the late stop they needed, their five-game winning streak was over.Just a misunderstanding with me and my teammates, Bryant said, referring to the blown defensive assignment on Wideman. Ive just got to be better in that moment.A mistake that Chrabascz sensed was coming and that Holtmann took a chance on.The pass was really important, Holtmann said. You guys know it doesnt always work like that, and I was glad it did there.BIG PICTUREButler: After last weeks stumble at Indiana State, the Bulldogs have rrebounded with consecutive wins over ranked foes and are 3-0 against the Top 25 and 2-0 against the Top 10 this season.dddddddddddd. It should be a good resume to help Butler climb in the polls.Indiana: For the second time this season, the Hoosiers played an in-state opponent -- and somehow they have managed to lose both. Indiana has a chance to rebound at their favorite venue, Assembly Hall, where the Hoosiers will play three straight unranked teams before the next big matchup, New Years Eve against No. 11 Louisville.THOUSAND POINTS OF LIGHTThe inbound play was only one of Chrabasczs contributions on a milestone day. The senior from Rhode Island scored 14 points, had three rebounds and four assists and became the 38th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He has 1,007 in his career, and he may not be the last one to reach that milestone this season. Martin, a junior, has 965.OFF NIGHTIndiana might be the nations best 3-point shooting team over the past three seasons, averaging 9.6 per game during that span. But the Hoosiers werent nearly that good Saturday, when they went 0 from 8 beyond the arc in the first half and finished 6 of 21. The six 3s is a season-low.BLUE BACKButler Blue III, the Bulldogs beloved mascot, returned to the court for the first time this season Saturday. Blue III had been rehabbing since October surgery to repair a torn ACL. But the dog looked quite happy to be on the court for player introductions and later expressed his happiness on his Twitter account: DAWG GONE ITS GOOD TO BE BACK!UP NEXTButler: The Bulldogs put a 34-game home winning streak against nonconference opponents on the line Wednesday against Vermont.Indiana: Tries to extend its home winning streak to 25 when Delaware State visits Monday.---More AP college basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 .
