The Calgary Stampeders signed import defensive back Jonathan Hefney on Tuesday. Hefney played three full seasons and parts of a fourth with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before being released on Saturday. Just prior to training camp, Hefney was charged with marijuana possession in his home state of South Carolina. "Jonathan is a very good football player who has accomplished many great things during his first four years in the CFL," said Stampeders head coach and general manager John Hufnagel. Hefney, who has earned East Division all-star honours on three occasions and CFL all-star recognition twice, started all 18 games for the Blue Bombers last season, seeing action at both halfback and strong-side linebacker, and led the club with 74 tackles. He also had four fumble recoveries, three special-teams tackles, one sack, four tackles for loss, three pass knockdowns, one forced fumble and one interception. For his CFL career, the 28-year-old has played 60 games and amassed 241 tackles, including nine tackles for loss, two sacks, 13 interceptions, 26 pass knockdowns, six fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was the East Divisions finalist for the Most Outstanding Rookie award in 2009. The former University of Tennessee standout was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008 and has also been with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.
