SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- So great is trainer Chad Browns embarrassment of riches in the turf female ranks, it seems the only one who can beat him is himself. On Saturday afternoon, Guapaza got away from her stellar stablemates -- most of them, anyway -- to grab the spotlight with a head victory over Suffused in the Grade 3, $200,000 Waya Stakes at Saratoga. Another Brown trainee, Grade 1 winner Ball Dancing, was fourth. This was Guapazas fifth start in the United States for the Heller familys Don Alberto, an industry leader in Chile and has made major forays into Kentucky bloodstock and American racing in recent years. The Seeking the Dia mare, a multiple Group 2 winner in her native Chile, began her American campaign by finishing third in the Grade 3 The Very One, beaten less than a length by Brown-trained stablemates Olorda and Dacita. She was then second in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay, won by another Brown trainee in Sea Calisi; and third to Dacita and Sea Calisi in the Grade 2 New York.Looking to shake things up, Brown then stretched Guapaza out to 1-1/2 miles -- the distance of the Waya - for the River Memories Stakes last month at Belmont Park. She broke through with a win to set her up for Saratoga.Shes really settled down, she was a little high-strung when we got her, Brown said. She held some tough company early on when I was putting her in races with some of my other horses that are Group 1 horses. I think this fillys a Group 1 horse eventually in her own right. We thought wed try to reinvent her a little bit to get her away from that class of horse, because she was just coming up a little short earlier in the year, so we tried farther, longer distances where she could be the boss. With Grade 1 winners Photo Call and Ball Dancing showing the early way in the Waya, Guapaza ($9), sent away as the lukewarm favorite, sat in fourth under Javier Castellano after the first mile. Castellano swung her four wide into the stretch as the field began to engulf those leaders, and Guapaza prevailed in a gritty stretch drive, striking the lead late and then holding off Suffused by a head. The final time on the inner turf was 2:25.96.After Suffused, it was 1-1/2 lengths back to Achnaha, with Ball Dancing holding fourth.Guapaza was one of four winners on the Saturday card for Brown, who has won seven races, topped by three stakes, in the last four days. He also won Fridays Grade 2 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes with Camelot Kitten and Saturdays Lure Stakes with Shining Copper, and now has seven stakes wins at the Saratoga meet. You try to set a plan up and hope for good weather and racing luck and so many things to go your way, Brown said. This stretch here, a lot of things have gone our way.Christian Okoye Womens Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. Misfire on a lob, and the goaltender grabs it with ease. Watch out for the forest of arms in front of the cage, or its all over before it even begins. When it comes to Olympic water polo, players have a myriad of options when shooting on the worlds best goaltenders and precious little time to make a decision. They rely on a mix of intuition and an almost instantaneous assessment of the landscape when deciding which option to take.In a game Im shooting so many times and Im shooting in stress situations, sometimes when Im tired, sometimes when Im fresh, and you start learning about situations, U.S. captain Tony Azevedo said. So if I catch a ball, I see how the goalie is and then I know I am going to use this shot. Things start to come naturally. If I have to actually think about what I am going to shoot, thats when it starts getting scary. While centers are close enough to tip the ball and there are occasional backhands right in front of the goal, most shots can be broken down into one of three categories: skip, lob or a throw straight toward the net.Skips are tough for goaltenders to read, but they are a tricky proposition in the churning water. Finding a path clear of defenders also is a challenge. My coach in Italy last year insisted on skip shots because he said if youre shooting for an upper corner you can miss by a centimeter and you miss, UU.ddddddddddddS. attacker Josh Samuels said. If youre shooting for a skip shot, you can miss by a meter and it can still go in. Theres some truth to that. You hate it when it goes flying over the goal, but theres no fear in shooting a skip shot versus shooting for the upper corner. It just depends on the game.If the goaltender comes out too much or at the wrong time, players try to float the ball over the goalie for the score. A good center can help create more lob opportunities with an offensive presence in front, forcing the goaltender to address the situation.Deception and touch are key. Samuels, who scored 176 goals at UCLA, described himself as a terrible lobber. You want to draw the goalie up so when you lob it he cant move backwards, he said. Thats a unique challenge.Scouting also plays a role in which shots are used. The players know the goaltenders strengths and weaknesses coming into the game. For example, its tough to lob over the United States Ashleigh Johnson, with her long arms and 6-foot-1 frame. We have tons of tendencies, like individual tendencies that we do, our go-tos that we like to shoot, U.S. attacker Kaleigh Gilchrist said. But you try as much as you can to read the goalie and understand where theyre coming from so you try to beat them that way, or read the shot blockers as well.---Jay Cohen can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/jcohenap ' ' '
