Faf du Plessis will find out by Sunday if he will face a charge for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct after South Africas stand-in captain was shown on camera shining the ball with what appeared to be a sweet in his mouth. ICC CEO David Richardson is expected to take a call over the incident, which took place during the recent Hobart Test. The footage emerged on Wednesday, the day after the conclusion of the match, which South Africa won by an innings and 80 runs to take the series. It was not reported by match officials within the stipulated 18 hours after the game. Instead, the ICC was alerted of the incident through media queries and is now reviewing it of its own volition. It has until Sunday, a stipulated five days after it began reviewing the footage, to make its decision. The ICC has been alerted to the footage and is currently reviewing the incident from the perspective of it being a possible breach of the ICC Code of Conduct, an ICC spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo.Although Cricket South Africa has not made an official comment on the matter, it is understood the board is confident du Plessis was acting within the laws of the game. Cricket Australia has also not commented, neither has it registered an official complaint. This is not the first time du Plessis has come under scrutiny. In 2013, five penalty runs were awarded to Pakistan, the ball changed and du Plessis fined 50% of his match fee for rubbing the ball close to the zipper of his trouser pocket during a Test in Dubai. Du Plessis pleaded guilty to the charge and match referee David Boon said he was satisfied that du Plessis actions were not part of a deliberate and/or prolonged attempt to unfairly manipulate the condition of the ball.It is also not the first time South Africa have faced allegations of tampering with the ball, by either opposition or officials. In March 2014, David Warner accused AB de Villiers of scuffing up the ball with his gloves, for which Warner was fined 15% of his match fee. After the Perth Test, Josh Hazlewood said he saw South Africa throwing the ball onto the pitch in order to try and accelerate the deterioration of one side in order to generate reverse-swing. Ahead of the Hobart Test, du Plessis maintained the ball had reversed the same for both teams and said the issue had been blown out of proportion. Neither incident was taken up further.Previously, in July 2014, Vernon Philander was fined 75% of his match fee after footage of him digging into the ball with his nail was made available to Jeff Crowe, the match referee in Sri Lanka. Philander accepted his penalty without contest.South Africa were originally scheduled to play a two-day pink-ball practice match over the weekend in Melbourne. Instead, that game has been altered to a one-day match on Saturday, giving them extra time off after their series win and ahead of the final Test, which starts in Adelaide from November 24. The nine-time Big 12 champion Jayhawks are positioning themselves for another title, as they have run out to a flawless 6-0 mark in conference play thus far. No Andy Murray? No problem.Despite missing the Wimbledon champion on court, who decided his schedule was too tight for him to play here, Britain took the early advantage in their Davis Cup quarterfinal against Serbia.Kyle Edmund emphatically won Fridays first singles rubber 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 against Janko Tipsarevic in amid nasty weather, with the rain hammering down on a slow court at the Tasmajdan Stadium. With Murray acting as cheerleader on the sidelines alongside captain Leon Smith after flying into Belgrade on a private jet Thursday morning, play was interrupted after just three games and again with Britain a set and break up.Edmund, 21, came back out for a third time to take a two-set lead and earn a triple-break in the third set before serving out his first Davis Cup win in the pouring rain and gusting winds. He later admitted Murrays presence inspired him. It means a lot, Edmund, the world No. 67, told a press conference. It just shows how much he cares about Davis Cup the fact hes come out basically on his holiday week to come and support.Someone who has done so much in the game, hes put so much effort into Davis Cup, especially last year, hes sitting there at the side of the court supporting, it does give you a lift. Its not like you look at him, its his presence. It means a lot for the whole team just having him around, especially after last week. He doesnt have to do it.With the stands almost completely empty of home fans by the end of this sodden contest, Edmund was driven on to an emphatic victory by the ever-raucous Stirling University Barmy Army, Britains cheering section in international competition, which stayed all the way to the last point. Its important to say how good this crowd is, coming from home to Serbia -- you can always hear them even in this weather, Edmund told Eurosport postmatch. Theyve stuck it out to support this team. Leon has been very helpful, every single one of the tteam has.dddddddddddd just tried to relax [in the breaks]. Its very emotional being out here, the adrenaline is pumping. Going back in there, its a bit of a lull. You just have to keep moving, keep loose, have some food, grab a shower. I tried to make sure I was the one ready to go.I wanted to get the intensity high right from the first ball when we came back out. It was a tricky situation in the middle of the second set where he broke back. If it goes one set all its a dogfight. But after that I played some good tennis. With Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki choosing to skip the tie, Serbia face further questions over the fitness of Tipsarevic, who has been on antibiotics after struggling with a high fever for a week while his ankles are swollen due to an allergic reaction. The 32-year-old may yet have to play two more matches this weekend, having been named in Serbias doubles team with Nenad Zimonjic to face Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot.Fridays second scheduled singles rubber between Dusan Lajovic and James Ward was postponed due to the weather and will be played Saturday at noon, with the doubles rubber to start no earlier than 4 p.m.Tipsarevic said: It wasnt fun. I got outplayed. I think even the birds in the sky saw Im unfit due to the illness I had before this event. I was on antibiotics for a long time and I had very few hours of tennis before this match. It wasnt an option for me not to play today. Our team is kind of torn apart. I am ready to play [doubles]. How good am I ready to play, I dont know.Earlier on Friday, the British Olympic association announced Edmund, Dom Inglot and Colin Fleming will join the Rio 2016 squad with Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, Johanna Konta and Heather Watson already selected.Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
