EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The mother of New York Giants first-round pick Eli Apple has put her son in a little awkward situation, Apple said Thursday. This is the result of Annie Apples outspoken nature in her Sports Illustrated columns and presence in mainstream media. Annie Apple also works for ESPN as a contributor to Sunday NFL Countdown. She has written in recent weeks about the Josh Brown?situation, as more details became public about the former Giants kickers 2015 domestic violence arrest. Annie Apple wrote about her personal experiences with domestic violence, and she criticized Giants co-owner John Mara for comments he made.In her most recent Sports Illustrated column, posted late in the afternoon on Wednesday, Annie Apple wrote about being livid with the Giants because of her belief that the team was leaning heavily on her son in an effort to control her. She also wrote about deciding to skip the Giants most recent game against the Los Angeles Rams, even though she made the trip to London -- a move that definitely hurt her son.Eli Apple remembers it as being the first game his mother has missed since he was in high school.Apple was asked seven minutes worth of questions Thursday, exclusively about his mother, her columns and their relationship, rather than anything about this weeks matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. He said he expected it but also denied that the team was leaning on him to keep her quiet.Ill tell her [theyre not pressuring me], Apple said.Apple said he didnt yet read his mothers latest column, titled, Why I will never stop speaking out against injustice -- from the Giants, the NFL or beyond.None of his teammates had said anything to him about the situation as of Thursday afternoon. The situation has put the cornerback in a strange position as he tries to get his rookie season on track. Apple has missed two of the Giants first seven games and left early in two others because of hamstring and groin injuries. He was prepped by Giants personnel Thursday that he would be facing questions about his mother and her most recent column. Its definitely a weird position, of course. You want to just focus on football and have football be your main focus, Apple said. Sometimes when things like this come up, it makes it a little bit hard because youre thinking about it a little bit. But you just have to move on from it, talk to her a little bit and try to speak your mind a little bit and move forward. But there is only so much he can do. Apple isnt about to reprimand or silence his mother.Thats my mom, he said. Shes going to check me, big time.Annie Apple is her own person, and like Eli, she has her own career, he said. Its up to the two of them to make sure they can co-exist. Eli Apple thinks it can happen.I know how to talk to her a little bit, he said. Me and my mom have been going at it for a while, of course. So Im going to come correct, of course. Im going to come as her child. The conflict of interest between columnist and player was always a potential outcome, with the mothers and sons careers so intertwined.I knew there were going to be some things that come with it because I know how she is, Apple said. She loves to be vocal and certain things and she has a big voice and definitely gets out to a lot of people. So I just expected things like this a little bit. Its all good. Few pundits in the football world expected Liverpool to challenge for the Premier League title this term, but things started in a positive direction for the Reds heading into Match Day 2 at Turf Moor against newly-promoted Burnley on Saturday. This season may turn out to be the year of the manager in the Premier League with Jose Mourinho at the helm of Manchester United, Pep Guardiola guiding Manchester City and Antonio Conte patrolling the touch line at Chelsea. But while all those managers will need some time to adjust to their new clubs, Jurgen Klopp is entering his first full season at Anfield, with only a handful of new players to bed-in.Klopps Reds showed flashes of brilliance as well as some defencive frailties in their wild opening 4-3 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Liverpool were uncharacteristically poor in the opening half as Theo Walcotts strike just 68 seconds after failing to convert a penalty gave the hosts the lead. However, Philippe Coutinhos brilliant free kick from 30 yards out pulled the visitors level at the break before they ran out to a 4-1 lead on the strength of goals from Adam Lallana, Coutinho and new boy Sadio Mane.Scoring four goals is wonderful, conceding three is the opposite of that emotion, Klopp said. We didnt start well in the game. I saw what we spoke about, but I saw we did it with 50 percent of being convinced about what we had to do.We changed our way of defending and we showed and told them where the spaces were, where we could go. Arsenal were better in the first half, of course, but the goal and the penalty was after wed lost the ball. When we had good orientation, used the wings and used the width of the pitchDespite an impressive offencive display, the defence will need to tighten up if the Reds are to take six points from their opening two fixtures. While left-back Alberto Moreno had a challenging afternoon, new centre-back Ragnar Klavan had a solid debut for his new cclub.ddddddddddddt was a crazy game, Klavan told the Liverpool Echo. This is one of the best leagues in the world and when your first game is against Arsenal you know its going to be at a really high level. It was a good for me to see what the Premier League is like. For the spectators, it was an amazing game to watch but there were good moments and bad moments for us. Winning was special but as a centre-half, when your team concedes three goals its never too great a day. You cant be too happy. We have to look into that and we will work on things in training for sure. Theres a lot of room for improvement. On the injury front for the Reds, striker Daniel Sturridge and winger James Milner are nearing a return. The club could be without Mane for the trip to Burnley after the forward suffered a shoulder injury in training on Wednesday.Burnley are aiming to rebound after last weeks 1-0 defeat to Swansea thanks to an 82nd-minute strike from Leroy Fer. Burnley had their chances as Ben Mee missed from close range and Swans goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was forced into a pair of spectacular saves on Sam Vokes and Dean Marney at the death. It was frustrating because I felt we gave a good account of ourselves, Burnley boss Sean Dyche said. The margins are tight and the details are important. We gave away a soft goal, but in the second half in particular we put in a good performance and kept a good side on the back foot.Vokes believes the Clarets can build on a decent opening performance. We played with a lot of freedom and showed that we deserved to be here, he said. We didnt look out of place at all and dominated the game but we just couldnt stick the ball in the net.Liverpool took three points from Burnley the last time the clubs met on March 4, 2015 with a 2-0 win on goals from Sturridge and Jordan Henderson.
