ATLANTA -- The Phillies are more than happy to take advantage of Atlantas awful season.A wins a win, Philadelphia manager Pete Mackanin said. Sloppy.Jeremy Hellickson pitched into the sixth inning and drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run double to help the Phillies beat the bumbling Braves 9-5 on Saturday night.Atlanta, the major leagues worst team, put on a clinic of bad baseball in the eighth as Philadelphia scored four runs without a hit.Hunter Cervenka issued four walks, Ryan Weber hit a batter and two infielders committed an error to bring a chorus of boos from the fans.Ill just say this -- when you score four runs without a hit, you better win that game, Mackanin said. You better win the game.Hellickson (8-7) allowed nine hits, three runs and one walk and struck out two in 5 2/3 innings. He improved to 4-1 with a 2.27 ERA in his last seven starts despite getting chased when Anthony Reckers RBI single cut the lead to 5-3.Hellickson was pulled because his right hand was sore after jamming it on a foul ball he hit earlier in the game.A little tough to grip, I think, just the curveball, Hellickson said.Braves starter Julio Teheran blew a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Hellickson doubled over the bag at third.Teheran (3-9) allowed five hits, three runs, one walk and struck out four in five innings. He left his last start, a no-decision at Colorado on July 22, with tightness in his right lat.Philadelphia went up 5-2 in the sixth against Eric OFlaherty on Freddy Galvis two-run single. Odubel Herrera missed a chance to add on when OFlaherty struck him out with the bases loaded. Its been a recurring theme for the Phillies, who began the night with a .145 average with runners in scoring position and 72 stranded runners over their last eight games.Atlantas bullpen had pitched 18 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, but that stretch ended with a thud. Cervenka threw just five of 21 pitches for strikes and walked in a run in one-third of an inning. With Weber pitching, two runs scored on third baseman Adonis Garcias fielding error. Shortstop Erick Aybar then booted a grounder to load the bases before Weber hit Aaron Altherr with a pitch to make it 9-3.That one inning got away from us, interim Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. We were right there. We couldve kept the game (close). A couple of tough plays that didnt go our way.The Braves took a 2-1 lead third on RBI singles by Nick Markakis and Adonis Garcia. The Phillies made it 1-0 in the second. Ryan Howard doubled to begin the inning and lumbered home from second on Cameron Rupps RBI single.Atlanta scored twice in the eighth.Hellickson tried to brush aside questions about whether he might be traded before Mondays deadline.Ive just been focused on every start and between start, he said. Yeah, whatever happens, happens, like Ive told you guys, I hope Im still here Tuesday.SPLASHY MOVEThe Braves swung a big trade to address their woeful offense -- and add some spark heading into next season- by acquiring pricey slugger Matt Kemp and $10.5 million from San Diego for troubled outfielder Hector Olivera.Atlanta had tried for several months to deal Olivera following his April 13 arrest on domestic violence charges. He is eligible to play again in the major leagues on Tuesday following his 82-game domestic violence suspension. The Padres plan to designate Olivera for assignment when he comes off the restricted list Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced.Despite arthritis in both hips, Kemp could boost the weakest offense in the major leagues. Atlanta ranks last in runs scored and homers.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Jerad Eickhoff (6-12) has a 3.83 ERA but leads the NL in losses. He is 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA in four career starts against Atlanta.Braves: Snitker has yet to decide on a Sunday starter.---AP Sports Writer Bernie Wilson contributed to this story. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For two decades, finishing at .500 would have given the Royals reason to celebrate. Two trips to the World Series changes perspective. The Royals spent the first day after the regular season Monday ruing how a season full of promise went awry. There were devastating injuries, key acquisitions failed to live up to big contracts and an offense predicated on manufacturing runs was too often rendered out-of-order.We expected to perform much better and it just didnt happen, general manager Dayton Moore said. Its sad that it ended the way it did. We obviously wish we were still playing. But weve got work to do, as every offseason demands, and well go to work starting tomorrow in Arizona. Not all is lost. Not by a long shot. The Royals return most of their core from last years championship team next year, and are primed for one more run at the postseason. Their window to reach another World Series could close afterward as stars such as Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain and Danny Duffy reach free agency in 2018.Thats something we discuss constantly, Moore said. We wont be able to sign them all, as you know. Thats a tough question and thats something well have to figure out. There is still plenty of work to do before next season, though. Here are the story lines that will dominate the offseason, which came far too early for fans in Kansas City.GETTING HEALTHYMoustakas should be ready for spring after surgery to repair his ACL, and others dealt with nagging injuries that limited them down the stretch: Sal Perez had hamstring and knee trouble, Hosmer had a wrist injury, Cain was dealing with a sprained hand. More than anything else, the Royals simply need to get to full strength by spring.STARTING ROTATIONThe Royals struggled all season to find a fifth starter, finally getting left-hander Jason Vargas back from Tommy John surgery in the waning weeks of the regular season. He should be ready to go for spring, but there are still holes in the rotation.Edinson Volquez has a mutual option for next season, though it is hardly a foregone conclusion either side will exercise it. Volquez may want to shoot for a multiyear deal while the Royyals may be reticent to pay him $10 million after he went 10-11 with a 5.dddddddddddd7 ERA.Duffy, Vargas, Yordano Ventura and Ian Kennedy still should give the Royals three solid starters. But they could be in the market again for that fifth arm. Were living above our means, Moore admitted, when asked about taking on another big contract. This payroll was put together to go deep into the postseason, and Im accountable for that. Its not going to look very good on the spreadsheet and thats not going to look very good when the bill comes due.SPEAKING OF MONEYThe Royals will have to decide whether to exercise a $10 million option on All-Star closer Wade Davis and a $6.5 million option on light-hitting shortstop Alcides Escobar. Davis is a relative easy one. Despite dealing with injuries, he had a 1.87 ERA with 27 saves.Escobar is a bit trickier. The Royals could pay a $500,000 buyout and give the job to upcoming prospect Raul Mondesi Jr., using the savings to address other issues.Im working hard and just waiting for my time, Mondesi said. Offseason, Im going to work. Next year, come focused and concentrate and do my job.THOSE OTHER ISSUESOne of the priorities will likely be retaining designated hitter Kendrys Morales, who will be looking for a multiyear deal after hitting .263 with 30 homers and 93 RBI. The reason he was invaluable was that Kansas City struggled to score runs, and he was one of the only power bats in the lineup. Along with bringing him back, the Royals will be looking for another impact bat in the outfield from a relatively week free-agent class.WINDOW CLOSINGHosmer, Cain, Duffy and several others are under club control through next season, but that doesnt mean Moore will wait for them to hit free agency. There is a good chance he begins the difficult negotiations on long-term deals to retain what they view as their core.Im really proud of these players. Theyre my kind of guys, said manager Ned Yost, who will also be back next season. They play hard and they never quit. That makes it fun. ' ' '
